A Light in the Void
With the emergence of psychic powers in Haven, the Varok became obsessed with countering their inability to develop them.
Through years of genetic manipulation, use of ancient tech, and cocktails of drugs the Varok eventually succeeded. However, the psychics produced by this program did not posses the warfare potential the Varok desired. Their powers were weak, and more importantly they were all blind. While they could compensate for this handicap by using their powers to sense the world around them in a limited fashion, they were completely unsuited for combat and deemed a failure.
Everything changed the first time one of the Varok psychics was taken into hyperspace. While the rest of the ship’s crew lost their vision, the psychics normally useless eyes began transmitting sights no living creature had seen before. Star-sight. The ability to see in Hyper-space. Not only could they see the swirling chaos of the sub-dimension, they were able to make sense of the insanity. Able to see the pathways that wind through hyper-space the Varok gained the ability to make faster than light jumps without relying on established beacons.
